The origins of THE FAMOUS GROUSE date back to the early 19th century when Matthew Gloag took over the family farm and wine business they owned in Perth, Scotland. Matthew also started selling selected malts from all over Scotland and gained a lot of reputation. In 1860 his son William took over the company and began adding blend whiskies to the brand's range of beverages. In 1896 William's son, named Matthew after his grandfather, who had worked in the wine market in Bordeaux took control of the company. He created a blend in 1897 which he called "The Grouse Brand" and quickly became known throughout Perth and so the name was changed to Famous Grouse.

The Red Partridge is the noble and distinctive inhabitant of the bushes that cover the mountains and glenses of the Scottish Highlands, the appropriate emblem for this renowned whisky.
