Mini bottle Whiskey TOMATIN Legacy

The Tomatin Legacy whisky has obtained 99 points out of 100 possible in the latest edition of the prestigious awards The International Wine and Spirits Competition.

The TOMATIN Legacy is the company's most basic single malt and produced from a whisky aged in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and virgin oak barrels. Single malt does not carry age, as whisky is combined to produce a certain flavor instead of a specific age. The use of virgin oak to age a part of the whisky is a very original idea for a Scottish producer, and therefore it is a very interesting product.

HISTORY

The TOMATIN distillery is located in the Monadhltiah Mountains near Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. The distillery was established in 1897, and although many think that saying that a place has been "established" is a direct translation of the established in English, the fact is that when a place is established (according to Anglo-Saxon laws) is when a location is recognized by the company and that it begins to pay taxes. There are actually no records of when the distillery was created. Due to its location in the Monadhltiah Mountains it is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland, at 315 meters above sea level. In 1985 the distillery was remodeled and expanded, and renamed The TOMATIN Distillery Co. Ltd. The company today has 12 stills and a process that is closer to that of a large-scale industrial factory than that of a typical single-malt distillery. This is because the distillery has always been a bulk producer of Scotland's most recognisable whiskies, but in recent years TOMATIN began to focus its efforts on producing its own single malt as well as branding its own brand identity.

Tasting notes

Ripe lemons with honey and vanilla candy are its signature notes on the nose, while a pleasant fresh grapefruit flavor shows beautifully on the palate creating a superb impulse. Fragrant and complex, it has a harmonious and persistent ending."

In the glass, whiskey has a pale straw color, especially given the use of virgin barrels in whiskey, which usually impart much greater color tone. If the liquid is shaken a little, I notice that the whiskey is light in body, creating a very simple ridge from which thin tears fall and quick travel inside the whiskey.

On the nose it feels pleasant, with a combination of simple wood and green apples. There is also a sweet aroma reminiscent of meringue and that is accompanied by a subtle aroma of vanilla. After leaving the liquid in the glass I begin to feel aromas of pepper, pine trees and freshly cut grass with some lemon leaves.

In the mouth the TOMATIN Legacy brings out all those notes and subtle nuances that I felt on the nose, although it feels like a light whiskey, it has a dry and fresh feeling on the palate, which includes wood, green apple, grapes, hints of citrus peel and sweet flavors of meringue and vanilla along with an even more subtle touch of pine and tea. These last two flavors give a slightly acidic feel to the whiskey, but instead of being unpleasant they work very well to give a balance to the dry character of the whiskey. Nuances of tree bark and citronella are also felt under a mild almond flavor. There's no stronger flavor than the other, but to be a basic whiskey really makes me want to try more eccentric versions of the brand, but to be the cheap version of them, it's pretty good.

The aftertaste has a spicy feel with echoes of green fruits, almonds and vanilla. It does not last long in the mouth, but it has a freshness that some will find interesting.
