HISTORY

The history of Bushmills begins in 1608 when they are granted a license to distil and in 1784 the old Bushmills distillery is formalized. It was in the late eighteenth century that bushmills began to be recognized as an award-winning great whiskey. After World War II, it was the golden age for Bushmills as they became increasingly popular, especially in the US. In 2008, Bushmills celebrated its 400th birthday and the Bank of Ireland put them on its banknotes. The year 2011 and are still growing in popularity with Bon Iver, Elijah Wood and Chromeo becoming brand ambassadors.

The process used to make Bushmills starts with malt barley, ground into mash and then mixed with hot water to make wort. Yeast is then added to the wort and fermented into an alcoholic substance at about 8% ABV called washing. Now it is time for distillation, washing is boiled to distill the alcohol from the water and distilled three times and then matured in oak barrels. The barrels used range from American oak barrels, Spanish sherry, port, madeira or rum. They are left to mature for five, ten, fifteen or even more years. The next step is to blend the whiskies, so several different malt whiskies are selected and then blended to find the right flavor. Tasting notes

The nose is fruity with hints of vanilla, which complement the soft and warm honey sensation on the palate, followed by a fresh and crunchy finish.
